This
week’s class has been a demonstration lesson to teach Fourth Grade Students
about how to write descriptive pieces. The writing process was also
incorporated into the lesson. We believe that by equipping the students with
the knowledge of the writing process and how to use it effectively, we as
teachers, are helping students build confidence in their writing abilities as
well as promote independence and self-direction. We really enjoyed this
class because two out of the three blog owners are novice to the teaching
profession and by having such a knowledgeable lecturer, we deeply appreciated
her modelling this lesson, so that we know exactly what is expected of us when
we do stand in front of a class. We took down all the steps and wrote out all
the activities in detail that our lecturer, Miss Polius, conducted with us
because we do hope to utilize it in the near future. Most times in the
classroom, the teacher will tell us what is expected of us when we are on our
teaching practice journey, however, it is another thing when a teacher actually
models these behaviors with the
class. Another thing which really seemed interesting to us was the Five Senses
Cluster. This is an extraordinary tool for helping students organize their
thoughts about the given topic into the five senses: taste, sight, feeling,
hearing and smelling. We really appreciated how active and involved all
our classmates were in the exercise, even to the point where we acted like
actual fourth Grade students.
Although this experience
has helped us develop professionally, it has also helped us developed on a
personal level because another component of this assignment requires us to put
together a Writing Portfolio with pieces written for different purposes,
reflecting five different genres of writing, with the first being descriptive.
Therefore, we are of the belief that this in class exercise will help us tremendously
when it comes to the compilation of this particular assignment.
Our suggestion for this lesson was that the Lecturer should have provided everyone with a copy of the descriptive piece that she used in the introduction of the lesson so that we are able to follow on our own because although some students may hear and are able envision what is being said, that picture is not complete until they are able to see what is being read. However apart from this, there is nothing that we would change about this week's class.

Congratulations Shameika, Shaditta and Nikita on the creation of your blog. This lesson was very interesting. I must agree with you that teaching students the writing process will not only equip our students with self-confidence but also it will provide them with a direction in writing any given piece. This lesson was indeed a good one.

ReplyDeleteI concur with the idea that the lecturer is ver y knowledgeable about what she is lecturing. she epitomize what it is to be an effective teacher through her modelling of good practices in the classroom. I also find her to be very passionate about what her work. I would also accentuate the effectiveness of the writing process and the different outcomes that it produces in the classroom. reading this reflection and being part of the class I can objectively say that the week of 10-14 October was very informative

ReplyDeleteVery interesting session. Going back to the class in the not too distant future seems like a much easier task, as our noble lecturer has equipped me with a wealth of information on descriptive writing. What was great about that session was the modelling done by the lecturer.

I am pleased and my admonition to us as teachers is to make use of ms.polius teaching strategies and grasp the information that she is giving to us so we can use them in the classroom to enhance the learning environment.I must also congratulate the group on the creation of their blog .Great job.

I really did enjoy this lesson. The lesson was very well executed by Miss Polius. I feel like I am prepared to implement a lot of the best practices during this lesson when I do get an opportunity to teach.

ReplyDeleteIt was indeed an interactive lecture. The modeling of the lesson, on its own, facilitated comprehensive understanding of the techniques needed for teaching descriptive writing. Thus, this post truly reflects what transpired in the class. I believe that our professional horizons have broadened as a result of this lecture. I applaud the lecturer...Job well done!!!

ReplyDeleteWell said guys and I totally agree. I, too believe that the class should have been provided with a copy of the descriptive piece used. However, I definitely enjoyed the classes on the process of writing a descriptive piece. The lecturer did a remarkable job at modelling and the class participation was excellent. "Pixie's Dust"

I was not to happy about writing especially descriptive but when miss started the writing process using a descriptive piece I was very attentive because it was rather interesting. I believe that I can better address a descriptive piece and has found a great way to get students involved in descriptive writing. Marla Theodore

ReplyDeleteThis lesson was very interesting and supplied me with a wealth of information. Great modeling tips from our lecturer which will be of ample help in the future. Figurative language is a very important part of descriptive writing . With lots of practice one gets better at descriptive writing.

I find the teaching of Language to have been my demon in my three years experience so I was more inclined to learn more in this area of the programme. The lecturer, Ms. Polius, made the task of learnign the strategies to be easier through the use of diverse strategies which were simple to comprehend. I felt that we have a glimpse of the children were are going to teach in the near future should experience in the literacy clasroom. Despite the hindrances that we faced in our current location, I believe that we learnt as much as we can because we (lecturer and students) adapted quite well. ( Jervaughn)
