During the week of the 7th to the 11th, our course lecturer showed us many ways of incorporating poetry into the lesson in a fun and exciting way. These are some of the strategies that we cannot wait to commence practicing in our classrooms. The beginning of the class was the most thought provoking. The lecturer wrote the word poetry in the center of the board and we were required to come up one at a time to write down everything that we know about poetry. Just from this activity, my knowledge about what poetry is significantly increased. This is one tactic that will surely be employed in our classrooms in order to ensure that we do not reteach content that the students already know. But rather, employ strategies to help reinforce this knowledge. The classes conducted during this week, taught us that poetry is not always the serious five stanza, hard core business that we are used to. To date, this has been the most exciting class and there is absolutely nothing that we would change. Way to go Miss Polius!!!

I totally agree guys this is a very good strategy to use in the classroom to tap into the students' background knowledge on any given topic. This lesson also made me see that poetry is a piece of writing that can be used to evoke some kind of excitement and fun into any lesson. This definitely was an excellent lesson.
ReplyDeleteYou are so correct, some of those strategies will be ideal to use in our classroom. The class setting is one I will use in my classroom, especially with the way the lecturer introduced Poetry. Mearline Hippolyte
ReplyDeleteI was not at school on this particular day, but after reading your reflection I have one more strategy in my locker which I will no doubt use when I get back into the classroom. I love the idea of tapping into students prior knowledge as not only we become aware of what to teach but it actually allows the students to become more involve or active in the lesson. I tried something similar to this during my practicum lesson, that is the KWL chart and my students were just so eager to learn. Thank you Miss Polius for modeling such strategies.
ReplyDeleteThis by far was the best class of the entire teacher's programme. This goes to show that learning and fun goes hand in hand. Poetry, in my view, has been underused in the class. If done well, the classroom of any subject will come alive to bring forth concepts. This is one strategy that I am looking to try out. (Jervaughn M. Charles)
